Fixodent and Poligrip Denture Adhesives

In 2008 the American Academy of Neurology published a report linking the use of products containing excessive amounts of zinc, such as Fixodent and Poligrip, to neuropathy and hypocupremia (low levels of copper in the blood). In small doses Zinc is harmless; it is an essential mineral that is naturally present in some foods, added to other, and available as a dietary supplement. In excessive doses (such as those contained in Fixodent and Poligrp), zinc can lead to copper depletion and serious neurological problems.

Around 35 million Americans use denture creams, but because denture creams are classified as a Class I medical device, the FDA does not require labels warning that excessive use of their product could result in zinc poisoning and lead to neurological problems. The university of Texas Southwestern Medical Center tested both Fixodent and Poligrip denture adhesives to determine Zinc levels, both tubes contained excessive amounts of Zinc which could lead to neuropathy and hypocupremia.

Symptoms resulting from excessive intake of Zinc include:

Neuropathy

  • Numbness, tingling, pain and lack of strength in the extremities
  • Instability and loss of balance
  • Lack of coordination when walking
  • Abnormal blood pressure, heart rate, ability to perspire, constipation, bladder dysfunction, and sexual dysfunction.

Hypocupremia

  • Copper deficiency, fatigue, paleness, skin sores, edema, slowed growth, hair loss, anorexia and diarrhea. It can also lead to immune system and cardiovascular problems.

Dysesthesias

  • Abnormal sensations occurring when touching something, including burning, wetness, itching, electric shock and tingling

Parathesias

  • Numbness, tingling, pinching, in the arms and legs, does not require touching or stimulus in order to experience symptoms

Anemia

  • Reduction of healthy red blood cells, leads to fatigue and reduction of oxygen in the body.
