Raptiva Recall Attorneys

On April 8th, 2009 the pharmaceutical drug company Genentech, the manufacturer of the psoriasis drug Raptiva (efalizumab), announced that it had begun a voluntary, phased withdrawal of the product from the U.S. market. The Raptiva recall follows studies that revealed that prolonged use of the drug puts patients at risk of developing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare, serious, progressive neurologic disease caused by a virus that affects the central nervous system. Since FDA approval in 2003, an estimated 46,000 patients worldwide have been treated with Raptiva and approximately 2,000 patients in the U.S. may currently be receiving the drug for chronic plaque psoriasis.

The drug recall attorneys at The Alvarez Law Firm have been evaluating the potential for lawsuits on behalf of individuals who have developed brain infections, meningitis, or PML from taking the drug Raptiva. If you or someone you love has experienced adverse side effects from the weekly psoriasis injection of the drug Raptiva, our attorneys would welcome the opportunity to discuss your potential case, free of charge.

Raptiva Side Effects

Raptiva PML Brain infections are the main danger involved with prolonged use of the drug. PML, which has no known effective treatment, occurs in people whose immune systems have been severely weakened and often leads to an irreversible decline in neurologic function and death. Signs that you may be suffering from progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) include:

  • Fatigue & Weakness
  • Vision Loss
  • Paralysis
  • Impaired Speech
  • Impaired Cognition

PML is not the only side effect from use of the drug Raptiva. Since the drug is an agent which suppresses the immune system, many serious bacterial and viral infections have been known to occur. Examples of the types of infections that can result from use of Raptiva include:

  • Pneumonia
  • Sepsis
  • Meningitis
  • Encephalitis
  • invasive fungal disease
  • other opportunistic infections.
