Rezulin

A case in point is Rezulin, the brand name for the generic drug Troglitazone. The drug, which was manufactured by Parke-Davis, a division of Warner-Lambert Company, first came on the market in the United States in March, 1997 as a treatment for patients suffering from Type II diabetes - also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDD) or adult onset diabetes mellitus (AODM).

In March, 2000, by which time approximately one-million diabetics in the United States had been treated with Rezulin, the drug was removed from the market by the FDA after determining that severe liver toxicity was associated with its use. Many cases of liver failure, including as many as 90 deaths, had been reported to the FDA as of the time Rezulin was taken off the market.
