Judge's gavel with scales of justice in background

Courtroom View Network covers trials throughout the United States, documenting the judicial process. CVN also produces their picks for the Top 10 most impressive plaintiff verdicts that CVN covered, and our own Michael Alvarez and Alex Alvarez were included in 2021.

CVN’s Top Ten Verdicts

From Courtroom View Network: “Please note this isn’t merely a ranking of verdict amounts. We considered that along with the facts of the case, the parties and attorneys involved, and potential impact on other litigation to make our selection, which given the large numbers of trials CVN covers is always a difficult choice.”

Lipp v. Philip Morris

Philip Morris was found responsible for the cancer death of a woman who had smoked their Virginia Slims cigarettes, resulting in a $43 million verdict by a Florida jury in September.

The verdict, issued by Florida's 11th Judicial Circuit, includes $15 million in compensatory damages and $28 million in punitives for the death of Norma Lipp, who had smoked between 1 and 2 packs of cigarettes a day for decades, including approximately 15 years of smoking Virginia Slims.

Lipp's family, represented by the Alvarez Law Firm, alleges that the company's involvement in a long-standing conspiracy to conceal the dangers of smoking led to her nicotine addiction and fatal cancer. This case originated from the 1994 Florida class-action lawsuit, Engle v. Liggett Group Inc., against the nation's tobacco companies, resulting in a plaintiffs' verdict at trial.
